Song Details
Composition and Recording
"You Fucked Up" is a punk rock song with noise rock and heavy metal influences. The song is in the key of E minor.
When Ween were in high school, Dean Ween came up with the idea for a song with the refrain "You fucked up", as well as the guitar riff to go with it. Gene Ween then wrote the rest of the song's lyrics. The subject of the song is Gene's stepmother.[1] Dean later recalled that "You Fucked Up" may be the very first structured song they ever wrote with a verse and a chorus.[2]
"You Fucked Up" features vocals by Gene Ween and guitar by Dean Ween. The bass is played by Andrew Weiss and the drums are played by Dean Ween.
Alternate Versions
An early recording appears on the 1987 cassette tape The Crucial Squeegie Lip. The arrangement is more simple and is played in a faster speed, alongside featuring different but no less profane lyrics.
An early live version more comparable to its final arrangement (minus an entirely different guitar solo) is present as the first track on The Live Brain Wedgie!/Wad Excerpts.
Live Performances
"You Fucked Up" is known to have been played live as early as 1987, and has consistently been one of their most frequently played live songs over the years.[3]
