"Never Squeal" is a song by Ween from the 1990 album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness.
Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]
"Never Squeal" is an experimental punk/blues rock song with jazz and swing influences. It is within a bluesy variant of E minor.
The lead vocals are performed by Gene Ween. Guitar is played by Dean Ween. Like most of the songs on GodWeenSatan, the drums are played by Dean Ween and the bass is played by Andrew Weiss. The unique instrumental break features some semi-musical noise produced by some kind of gas-powered tool, which has been speculated to be a lawnmower, a chainsaw, or a leaf blower.[?]
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
"Never Squeal" is known to have been played live as early as 1989, and has been a fairly common inclusion in live sets throughout their career. When playing the song live, Dean Ween is known to use a more overdriven guitar tone, giving it a more hard-rock feel than the album version. Since about 2001, Ween has commonly used the instrumental break to feature a lengthy drum solo by Claude Coleman. Two live versions have been officially released: a 12/9/1992 recording from the Pure Guava tour is heard on At the Cat's Cradle, and a 9/14/2001 recording from a special anniversary concert is heard on GodWeenSatan: Live.
The Gene Ween Band and the Dean Ween Group each played the song separately during the Ween hiatus, especially in 2015. Gener has also occasionally played the song at solo acoustic shows.[1]
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
Official lyrics, handwritten by Dean Ween, were printed in the GodWeenSatan liner notes:
Never squeal on th' pusher
Don't lie to your mama
Just do whatcha wanna
It'll be ok
Don't swim in water
Don't fly inna daytime
Just do whatcha wanna
It'll be ok
Never smuggle no candy
Can't be whatcha wanna
When you haffa go down to the darkest places, yeah
Don't say what's really on yo' mind
Gots ta give it more time
Try to remember this rhyme
And you'll be ok
I know I turn u on
I think u and I could get along
Don't get me wrong
U gonna be alright
Say it with me, now[2]
