Nicole
"Nicole" is a song by Ween from the 1990 album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness.
Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording & Composition[edit | edit source]
"Nicole" is a dub reggae song consisting of a repeated bassline and guitar licks over the chords of A major and B minor. At over 9 minutes long, it is one of the longest Ween songs ever released on a studio album.
Gene Ween sings the lead vocal on the song, with some additional vocal parts by Dean Ween. The "singing" via talkbox guitar is by Deaner. "Nicole" is one of the few GodWeenSatan songs to feature a drum machine instead of live drums. The bass is probably played by Andrew Weiss, who played bass for most of the album.
Meaning[edit | edit source]
Nicole is apparently the name of a girl who Gene and Dean went to high school with.[1] She is also the subject of the song "Old Queen Cole".[2] In a 1998 interview Gener refers to her as an ex-girlfriend.[3]
Alternate Versions[edit | edit source]
An alternate version appears on the Focus demo tape, labeled "Nicole (Pt. 2)".
Another alternate version comes from the bootleg Big Timmy Wasserman Tape, where it is labeled "Nicole (Pt. 3)". It is sometimes seen labeled "Nicole (Reggae Version)".
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
The song is only known to have been played live one single time, which was at the GodWeenSatan: Live show in 2001.[4]
Other[edit | edit source]
The Roots briefly covered "Nicole" while playing as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.[5]
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
Official lyrics, handwritten by Dean Ween, were printed in the GodWeenSatan liner notes:
Nicole, I love you
I'll never leave you
Without you I turn to stone
Nicole, believe me
Love was meant to be
Consumed by you and me, Nicole
Nicole, I love you
I'm thinkin' of you
With every motion I make
When the stars are above you
Know that I miss you
And I'll be there sooner than you think
Nicole, Nicole, Nicole, Nicole
Exactly Theo
Cocoa puff[6]
