Song Details[edit | edit source]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"Hippy Smell" is a rare example of Ween shifting genres mid-song, with the song as a whole being a psychedelic folk rock song and the bridge bearing a jazz-rock influence with a spoken word vocal. The outtake version of the song is in F# major, while the Wad Excerpts version is in G# major.

The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween.

Alternate versions[edit | edit source]

An earlier version of "Hippy Smell" was released on the Wad Excerpts side of the 1988 LP The Live Brain Wedgie!/Wad Excerpts.

Live performances[edit | edit source]

While the song isn't known to have been played at a show proper[1], Ween performed the song privately at a house party in 1989 with Andrew Weiss on bass and Sim Cain on drums. A recording of this show isn't known to exist.
