Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"Marble Tulip Juicy Tree" is a psychedelic pop rock song in the key of D major.

The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween and guitar is by Dean Ween. The bass is played by Andrew Weiss and the drums are played by Dean Ween. The speech at the end is by friend of the band Larry Curtin, credited in the liner notes as "The Maharishi Lawrence E. Curtin".[1]

The lyric "Hoecke's mind screw" is a reference to friend of the band Chris Hoecke, also known as Lean Cuisine Ween.

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

The song was debuted by Gene Ween during a solo acoustic set for a radio studio in May of 1990, six months before the release of GodWeenSatan.[2] Since Ween proper began playing the song live in late 1990, it has remained a common staple of their live shows ever since.[3] Five different live recordings have been officially released:

  • 3/6/1992 - At the Cat's Cradle, 1992 (bonus DVD)
  • 12/9/1992 - At the Cat's Cradle, 1992
  • 4/30/1996 - Paintin' the Town Brown
  • 7/7/2000 - Live at Stubbs, 7/2000
  • 9/14/2001 - GodWeenSatan: Live

In addition, Gene Ween played the song commonly during solo acoustic shows in 2009 and 2010.[4]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Official lyrics, handwritten by Dean Ween, were printed in the GodWeenSatan liner notes:

I don't know who u are
Don't know who u want to be
When I carbonate the test tube
Then u won't see me
I've got a twin cab diesel combo
It takes me where I want to go
And all the nüphies are happy
They know of a fungus that grow
So when u see Hoecke's mind screw
Don't come running to me
Oik will scream and set aflame
Marble tulip juicy tree

Marble tulip juicy tree
It's where I want to be
When I gnaw on (the tulip)[5]
It'll wish that it was "me"

Every morning I put my shoes on
And I think about she
Who controls the 4 seasons
Inhaling kitties in (the see)[6]
It's like a noodle in a salad
Little birdy wants to be set free (ē)
I drill the corpse lobe with my mommy
Marble tulip juicy tree
So this song's about (the) loving thing
That u are 2 me
Just stay away from my adenoids
Marble tulip juicy tree[7]
