White Pepper is the seventh studio album by Ween, released on May 2, 2000 on Elektra Records.

Ween's seventh major studio album, White Pepper was a departure for Ween, with a polished, studio sound.

Description and History[edit | edit source]

About two years prior to the writing and recording process for White Pepper, Ween had established their current five-man lineup (Gene and Dean Ween alongside drummer Claude Coleman, Jr., keyboardist Glenn McClelland and bassist Dave Dreiwitz), marking White Pepper as their first album with the full band.

The writing process began in the same beach house that The Mollusk was written and partially recorded in. When it came time to record the material, Chris Shaw was chosen to produce the album (though the band had originally envisioned Todd Rundgren as producer[1]), with Shaw reportedly being the one to come up with the name White Pepper (after Shaw compared it to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Beatles' 1968 self-titled album, better known as The White Album). The band lived together in a farmhouse near Bearsville Studio in New York for the duration of the recording process.[2]

The cover art was illustrated by Jon Weiss, who had played the role of Ween's drummer in the 1994 film It's Pat.

The Japanese version of the album includes the B-side "Who Dat?" as a bonus track.

Coleman has stated White Pepper was his favorite album to play on[2], while Deaner has stated it is their "most accessible record" and that he loves it.[3]
