Song Details
Recording and Composition
"Ice Castles" is in the key of Eb major.
"Ice Castles" was written by Dean Ween on a ukulele,[1] circa December 1998.[2] It was originally titled "Baroque Jam 3", then "The Baroque Jam", but it was changed during mastering as they felt it "looked so stupid written down". It was shortly renamed to "The Anal Plump Fairies", and finally "Ice Castles" after the 1978 film of the same name.[3]
In 2015, Dean Ween released a pair of instructional videos to YouTube that show how to play the song on guitar.
Alternate Versions
An early demo version of the song appears on the bootleg Long Beach Island Tape under the title "Baroque Jam 3", with the previous two Baroque Jams being uncirculated.
Live Performances
Ween played the song live for the first time on New Years Eve of 1998, and played it a handful of times during the following year.[4] During the White Pepper tour in 2000, Ween began playing the song frequently, and it has remained a fairly common live Ween song ever since.[5] A 7/8/2000 recording from that tour appears on the album Live at Stubb's. "Ice Castles" was also played numerous times by the Dean Ween Group during the Ween hiatus.[6]
