Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]
"Ice Castles" is in the key of D# major.
"Ice Castles" was written by Dean Ween on a ukulele,[1] circa December 1998.[2] In 2015, Dean Ween released a pair of instructional videos to YouTube that show how to play the song on guitar.
Alternate Versions[edit | edit source]
An early demo version of the song appears on the bootleg Long Beach Island Tape under the title "Baroque Jam".
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
Ween played the song live for the first time on New Years Eve of 1998, and played it a handful of times during the following year.[3] During the White Pepper tour in 2000, Ween began playing the song frequently, and it has remained a fairly common live Ween song ever since.[4] A 7/8/2000 recording from that tour appears on the album Live at Stubb's. "Ice Castles" was also played numerous times by the Dean Ween Group during the Ween hiatus.[5]
