Song Details[edit | edit source]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"She's Your Baby" is in the key of G major.

The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween. Glenn McClelland plays keyboards, Claude Coleman plays drums, and Dave Dreiwitz plays bass. Uniquely on White Pepper, Pat Frey is credited with arranging the song[1], with Dean Ween commenting that she also may have provided backing vocals.

Drummer Claude Coleman has singled out "She's Your Baby" as a performance he is "really really proud of". He explained, "That's one I did with brushes, and I'm really proud of the subtlety and the style I put to it. I love that style of drumming, the sort of invisible transparent kind you can kind of hear but don't really hear. You're not really paying attention to it, they're just part of the fabric of the song, and they just disappear into this loveliness, you know? That song, I'm pretty proud of."[2] Deaner has additionally stated he was proud of his performance on the song, noting the modulation during the outro of the song as a highlight.

"The demo for She's Your Baby was recorded at Greg Frey's studio while writing demos for White Pepper. I think that's Pat Frey on backing vocals. Most of the people involved with the various recordings of this song claim it to be their proudest work on a Ween tune, me included for the guitar playing and modulation at the end. Pat did some arranging on this, and Claude claims it to be his finest drumming (on the LP version). I like all the versions for different reasons, we cut this song with 4 different arrangements and they all work." - Dean Ween

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

"She's Your Baby" dates back to at least the spring of 1999, when it was played acoustically by Gene Ween with Chris Harford during a Jimmy Wilson Group show. The song was debuted with the full band the following year during the White Pepper tour, but has remained only a somewhat occasional live song ever since.[3]

Gene Ween has played "She's Your Baby" numerous times during solo acoustic shows.[4]

In other media[edit | edit source]

"She's Your Baby" was featured in an episode of the show Wolf Like Me (season 1, episode 5).[5]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Janey came back from the stand
Smiling
With the writing of Kafka in hand
And a bunny in a can

Slipping and sliding, you feel yourself asking me
Why would you want me to try?
Squeezing your wrist and she's pulling you closer
Down where the devils are dying with laughter
And led to a place where there's no form of pleasure
She blows you a kiss from her lips

She's your baby
She's your baby
She's your baby

Those below cannot be renounced
'Cause they're talking
And for once I wish they'd shut up their mouths
Lock their doors and stay in the house

And while you're inside there you might wanna question
The fact that you're not quite the same
And look to the room where she's keeping so quiet
A million layers of crust and deposit
Blanket the seasons and bury the reasons
You told her that this was for good

She's your baby
She's your baby
She's your baby
