"Bananas and Blow" is a song by Ween from the 2000 album White Pepper.

Song Details[edit | edit source]

Concept[edit | edit source]

The title "Bananas and Blow" came from an idea initially for a concept album that Ween had had several years prior to recording White Pepper, which never came to fruition. In an interview dated October 1997, Dean Ween said:

"We want to go to Havana, Cuba and we want to call [the record] Bananas and Blow. We just want to live on bananas and cocaine for a month while we make our record. And all of side four is going to be "Bananas and Blow". Like the one song is going to be 25 minutes." [1] [2]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween. The guitar solo is played by Dean Ween. An early demo version of the song can be found on the bootleg Long Beach Island Tape.

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

Ween began playing the song live in the summer of 1999, almost a year before the release of White Pepper, and it has consistently remained a very common live Ween song ever since.[3] A 7/7/2000 recording from the White Pepper tour is found on the Live at Stubb's album.

In addition, Gene Ween has played "Bananas and Blow" numerous times during solo acoustic shows.[4] It has also been played live by the Dean Ween Group.[5]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Sancho brought a message from the Fat Man
Sorry boy, to leave you high and dry
But I went to see my mom in Ensenada
And I left a little something to help the time go by
Just a little something to help to keep you high

Bananas and blow
Bananas and blow
Stuck in my cabana
Livin' on bananas and blow

Now the rainy season reminds me of Maria
The way she danced, the color of her hair
Now I'm locked inside a stall in the cantina
Eatin' the bananas and the cocaine off the mirror
Lookin' for a ticket to take me away from here

Bananas and blow
Bananas and blow
Stuck in my cabana
Livin' on bananas and blow

Bananas and blow
Bananas and blow
Stuck in my cabana
Livin' on bananas and blow

Bananas and blow
Bananas and blow
Stuck in my cabana
Livin' on bananas and blow

Bananas and blow
Oh, bananas and blow
Stuck in my cabana
Livin' on bananas and blow
