Song Details[edit | edit source]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

The studio version of "The Grobe" is in the key of D# major, while live performances transpose it up to E major.

The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween. The guitar solo is played by Dean Ween. Claude Coleman plays drums, and Dave Dreiwitz plays bass.

"The Grobe" was written by Gene Ween[1], and was first played live by Ween in January 1999.[2]

Gene Ween has stated facetiously that "The Grobe" is about "cooking rice and heroin".[3]

Alternate versions[edit | edit source]

An early demo recording is heard on the bootleg Long Beach Island Tape.

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

After a one-off debut performance in early January 1999,[4] Ween began playing "The Grobe" regularly in the summer of that year. Since then, it has been a reliably common live Ween song.[2] A 11/8/2003 recording from the Quebec tour is heard on the album Live in Chicago. In addition, Gene Ween has played "The Grobe" numerous times at solo appearances, including solo acoustic shows, as well as with his bands Freeman and the Gene Ween Band.[5]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Sometimes the ones you hold so close can make you cry
But it's a pain in the ass to let 'em go
And with a battered wish you hoped that the monkey wore a tie
But it's no surprise to find he don't

Put the pointed pencil in the pepper-po
And take a little sniff of the things below
Bring it to a boil, then simmer low
Put the noodle on the griddle as it climbs the grobe

Watch the worker shield his heart from the world outside
Didn't get a chance to let 'em know
Alsace is spinning fast and wine mixed with the tide
Please don't let my brain explode

Put the pointed pencil in the pepper-po
And take a little sniff of the things below
Bring it to a boil, then simmer low
Put the noodle on the griddle as it climbs the grobe
