Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]
"Old Queen Cole" is a hardcore punk/noise rock song with prominent stoner rock and heavy metal elements. It revolves around two power chords, E5 and F5.
The lead vocals are performed by a mixture of Gene Ween and Dean Ween, though Deaner sings more prominently live. Guitar is played by Dean Ween. Like most of the songs on GodWeenSatan, the drums are played by Dean Ween and the bass is played by Andrew Weiss. The soft/low backing vocal may possibly be by Deaner.[?]
Meaning[edit | edit source]
The liner notes suggest that Old Queen Cole is the same girl who is the subject of the song "Nicole".[1] Nicole is a girl that Gene and Dean went to high school with.[2]
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
Played live as early as 1989, the song was never very commonly played but has remained an occasional inclusion in live sets over the years.[3]
Three live recordings have been officially released:
- 10/31/1991 (The Pod tour) - At the Cat's Cradle (Bonus DVD)
- 12/9/1992 (Pure Guava tour) - At the Cat's Cradle
- 9/14/2001 (special anniversary show) - GodWeenSatan: Live
Live Spoken Intro[edit | edit source]
[From December 29th, 1990]
Gene: I loved this girl. She went to college. Started fucking somebody else. I, Papa Gene Ween, of Ween, was left out in the cold. But I still think of her... cause... I just do. So... we wrote this song for her.
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
Official lyrics, handwritten by Dean Ween, were printed in the GodWeenSatan liner notes:
Old Queen Cole, gotsta take control
You drinkin' whiskey and wine, and it tastes just fine
4 u now Nicki, life is gettin' tricky
And you're runnin' outta gas, drivin' way too fast
Full throttle in gear, tryin' hard to steer you
Towards immaculate conception, heavy metal perception
There's a world that's all around u, and no one will ever find u
For u that's ok, tomorrow's another day
Rock, roll, butter, bread, remember what yo' mama said
Hey, it's jes' yo' life, find the biggest knife
U can find now baby, yeah you actin' like a lady
You got blood on your pants, and I know that you can dance
Nicole[4]
