"Puffy Cloud" (alternatively known as "Puffi Claude") is a song by Ween from the 1990 album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness.

Song Details[edit | edit source]

Recording and composition[edit | edit source]

"Puffy Cloud" is a psychedelic anti-folk song in the key of D major.

The lead vocals on "Puffy Cloud" are shared by Dean and Gene Ween, sung over acoustic guitar with no bass or drums. The GodWeenSatan liner notes list the song title as "Puffy Cloud (Puffi Claude)".

Alternate versions[edit | edit source]

A rough mix appears on the Big Timmy Wasserman demo tape.

Live performances[edit | edit source]

Played live as early as February of 1990 (nine months before the release of GodWeenSatan), the song was somewhat common at shows in the early 90s. Starting around 1994, performances of the song tapered off and it has become increasingly rare to hear live.[1] However, Gene Ween played the song a few times at solo acoustic shows in 2009.[2] Two live recordings have been officially released: a 1994 recording is on Paintin' the Town Brown, and a recording from the 9/14/2001 anniversary show is on GodWeenSatan: Live.

Live Spoken Intro[edit | edit source]

[From February 2nd, 1990]

  • Gene: Does everybody here smoke pot? No? We smoke pot.
  • Dean: Not me man. Oh man.

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Official lyrics, handwritten by Dean Ween, were printed in the GodWeenSatan liner notes:

Drift away on a puffy cloud
Go away on a puffy cloud
My brain is dead from too much pot
'Cuz (Gene) (Dean) and I smoke too much pot

Cloudy cloudy cloudy cloud
Cloudy cloud, cloudy cloud

Float away on a cotton ball
We write songs about the clouds
My brain is dead from too much pot
'Cuz (Gene) (Dean) and I smoke too much pot

Cloudy cloudy cloudy cloud
Cloudy cloud, cloudy cloud[3]
