"Stacey" is a song by Ween, best known as an outtake from GodWeenSatan: The Oneness that was included as a bonus track on the 10th anniversary reissue of the album. Similar to Devo's "Mongoloid", which the group covered, the song is about someone with Downs Syndrome.

Alternate versions[edit | edit source]

An earlier version of the song appeared on the Wad Excerpts side of the 1988 LP The Live Brain Wedgie!/Wad Excerpts.

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"Stacey" is a hard rock song with psychedelic and punk rock elements. It is in the key of E major.

Stacey is apparently the name of a girl who Gene and Dean went to high school with.[1] The lead vocals are by Gene Ween, and Dean Ween plays guitar. The GodWeenSatan version likely features Andrew Weiss on bass and Dean Ween on drums.

Live performances[edit | edit source]

"Stacey" is known to have been played live as early as the spring of 1988.[2] It was played semi-regularly in those early years until 1993. Over two decades later, following the 2016 Ween reunion, "Stacey" was finally brought back.[3]

Quotes[edit | edit source]

"The first "real ween" tunes. Put aside everything we did from 1984 to like 1986. I actually learned to tune the guitar and started playing conventional chords. Aaron had a girlfriend named Jen (can't remember her last name), some goth girl from a few towns away. We got together at my house, with Jen also, and recorded "Stacey". Tthe original version has the three of us clapping at the end. I couldn't believe that we had actually written a "song". The next day we were in the stairwell between classes, and I saw Aaron and said, "Dude I've got an idea for a song, it goes "YOU FUCKED UP!!!" and the riff will go like this". After school we recorded it and he wrote the lyrics on the spot, the fuckin' Nazi Whore was his stepmother. I won't name her name, over the years she turned out to be really nice, but not back then. So, in two days we knocked out the first two "real" Ween songs. Thank you for listening, this concludes my history lesson of the week." - Dean Ween

"Children, especially teenagers, can be very cruel, none crueler than Aaron and I were though. We had a retarded girl in our class named "Stacey" that always had this big smile on her face, and she would walk up to you smiling and say "HELLO" with that big smile. Of course, we picked on her and wrote a song. That's why Aaron says "HELLO" so many times in it. He still does it when we play it. I'm not proud of this at all, I wish I could take it back, bullying is fucking lame" - Dean Ween
