Song Details[edit | edit source]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"Learnin' to Love" is a song in the key of A# major.

The song was written by Gene Ween, who also sings the lead vocals. According to Dean Ween, "Gene found some website that had all of this slang used by people that bet on horse races and made a song out of it." He added, "I totally dig it, it sounds like some white trash shit."[1][2]

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

Gene Ween introduced "Learnin' to Love" in early 2007 when he played it at a few solo acoustic shows. Later that fall, following the release of La Cucaracha, the song was introduced with the full live band and has been a common live Ween song ever since.[3]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Learning to love
Loving to learn
A handicap at the home turn
The key horse on the high weight
Lay it off in the length
A listed race was a long shot
Doot-doot-dooblep...

Part wheel on the pasteboard
A penalty for the point spread
Ran post time on the scratch sheet
A roughy was a ringer in the return

Learning to love
Loving to learn
Single stakes on the short price
A spot play in the stretch turn
A sure thing for the tipster
With true odds on the weigh-in
Doot-doot-dooblep...

Learning to love
Loving to learn
A combo bet for the dead heat
A bug boy ran a bull ring
There's a dead track at the derby
With a dual forecast on the dime
Doot-doot-dooblep...

Bearing in on the bell lap
Betting board shows a sure win
A bookie boxed on the bobble
I made a blind bet in the black type

Learning to love
Loving to learn
