"Friends" is a song by Ween, released in two different versions on the 2007 The Friends EP and the 2007 album La Cucaracha.
Song Details[edit | edit source]
"Friends" is a song in the key of F# major.
"Friends" was initially written and recorded by Gene Ween as a demo for La Cucaracha. However, after recording it, he had the idea to have the song produced in a European EDM style, a decision which Dean apparently did not agree with. This resulted in the Friends EP version of the song, produced and mixed by two German electronic dance music producers, CJ Stone and DJ VooDoo, the latter of whom was known for producing music for Crazy Frog. (Greg Frey is credited with additional recording).[1]
Dean Ween explained the story behind the EP version of the song:
Aaron did a demo of "Friends" for this record [La Cucaracha] . . . and he really wanted to work with, as he says, a gay Euro DJ. It was something that was very important to him for some reason. My feeling was, this should be the first track on our record. But he felt so strongly about doing it that it was like, "Okay, let's see what happens." I figured in a million years, he would never pull it off, like find a gay Euro DJ to do it, and it only took him about five seconds to find someone. He found the guy that did the Crazy Frog stuff. Then I had to cop to it. It was the first time we ever tried that. It was sort of an experiment, I guess. Aaron got his gay Euro fucking DJ song, which I take absolutely no responsibility for.[2]
The La Cucaracha version, released four months later, was produced by long-time Ween producer Andrew Weiss and sounds more like a conventional Ween song.[3]
The lead vocals on both versions are sung by Gene Ween.
A remixed version of the Eurodance mix, with more overt references to Crazy Frog, was released on Best of Crazy Hits by Crazy Frog on December 11, 2009, listed under the title "Friends - Ween Meets the Crazy Frog" on streaming services.[4][5]
Ween played "Friends" live only twice on the La Cucaracha tour, and have not played it since 2008.[6] However, Gene Ween has played the song numerous times individually, both solo acoustic and with the Gene Ween Band.[7]
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
I dreamt of a move
A great move
To another place with much more land
I was driven by car
And woke before I got there
I remember the place and it was beautiful
A friend's a friend who knows what being a friend is
Talking with a friend
As friends we were always so close but so far away...
Friends in life are special
Do you want me as your special friend?
Cuz you're the friend that I've been searching for
There was more for me
It would be more open
Scary to think that I could be happy
She'd said it was the same road
But up more, a lot more
Just be patient and we'll get there
A friend's a friend who knows what being a friend is
Talking with a friend
As friends we were always so close but so far away...
Friends in life are special
Do you want me as your special friend?
Cuz you're the friend that I've been searching for
I never got there
But the morning brings light
And so, I'll keep on looking
A friend's a friend who knows what being a friend is
Talking with a friend
As friends we were always so close but so far away...
Friends in life are special
Do you want me as your special friend?
Cuz you're the friend that I've been searching for
