Song Details[edit | edit source]
"The Fruit Man" is a song that cycles between the keys of G minor and A minor.
"The Fruit Man" was written by Gene Ween, who also sings the lead vocals. The inspiration for the song came from a trip to Jamaica, where he observed fishermen and fruit sellers arguing.[1]
Ween has only played "The Fruit Man" live one single time, in the spring of 2007, six months before the release of La Cucaracha.[2]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]
The fruit man sold the guava to the Black man
The Black man peeled the skin with the bare hand
A juice man took a stand with the fruit man
And they cooked up the fish brought in fresh from the ocean
The fish man sold an axe to the boat manA China man caused a scene with the Black man
Accused him of selling fish that was frozen
The Black man yelled at the China man
"It is not broken, it is not frozenThe fish, it was just caught in the ocean
I do not steal, don't breathe another sound
Or I'll take back the fish and return it to the ocean!"
The fruit man consoled the Black manThe boatman explained to the China man
And it was dark, really dark, with the sun down
And the fish, they swam, they swam in the ocean
