"Gabrielle" is a song by Ween. Originally a Chocolate and Cheese outtake, it was later released in an altered form on the 2005 odds-and-ends compilation Shinola, Vol. 1.

Song Details[edit | edit source]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"Gabrielle" is in the key of B minor.

The version of "Gabrielle" present on Shinola, Vol. 1 was originally recorded in 1992 during the demo sessions for Chocolate and Cheese, and it circulated among fans unofficially as part of the bootleg Chocolate and Cheese Demos: Summer 1992. Over a decade later, in 2005, a remixed version was officially released on Shinola.

The song was written by Dean Ween and has a notable stylistic resemblance to the 1970s band Thin Lizzy. As Dean explained: "I had just discovered Thin Lizzy probably that week, and so I was fuckin' listening to nothing but that. And I wrote that song."[1]

Alternative versions[edit | edit source]

In addition to the circulating Chocolate and Cheese outtake mix of "Gabrielle", there is also a rougher demo version that has also been circulated by fans through the same bootleg.

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

Although rarely heard live before Shinola, after the release of that album the song quickly entered regular live rotation, and has remained so ever since. It was also played often by the Dean Ween Group during Ween's hiatus, particularly in 2014 when it was a regular part of the set.[2]

In other media[edit | edit source]

In 2014, the song was apparently used in a German car commercial.[3]
