Song Details

Background

The song's lyrics describe an event that took place on January 28th, 1994 where the Rising Sun Baptist Church in south Philadelphia burned down, resulting in the death of two firefighters and multiple people suffering injuries.[1] The line "Saw it last night on Action News" implies this song was possibly written and recorded on February 1st, 1994, a day after the original Action News broadcast,[2] however there is currently no confirmation beyond the line that this is true. Spectrum most likely refers to the Spectrum arena in Philadelphia, supported by the Philly accent the vocals are delivered in.

Recording and Composition

"Church Fire" revolves around sparse instrumentation loosely playing around the chords of Am and C+.

Lyrics

Two men dead in Philly town
The church, it burned down to the ground
Both had kids, and wives too
Two good men, like me and you

Church fire
Church fire
Church fire
No way

Four hundred on the bottom, and eighteen hundred at the top
Heat that'll make your fuckin' eyes pop
Two firemen dead, how could this be?
At a Baptist church in South Philly

Church fire
Church fire
Church fire
Church fire

Saw it last night on Action News
The plan's in effect for Spectrum, too

Church fire
Church fire
Church fire
Church fire[3]
