The Chocolate & Cheese Tour refers to six tours undertaken by Ween between June 24th, 1994 and May 4th, 1996. The shows were notable for being the first complete tours played with a backing band, consisting of Andrew Weiss on bass and Claude Coleman on drums. Weiss would leave the band after their June 16th, 1995 show.

The show followed the Pure Guava tour (1992-1994) and the Country Tour (1996).

Date[edit | edit source]

First Leg[edit | edit source]

This was the first tour Ween played as a four-piece band. They had played a few shows as a four-piece on The Pod Tour and a handful of one-off shows towards the end of the Pure Guava Tour, but this was the first leg to feature a backing band on each show. The setlist staples featured a healthy blend of the group's more popular songs from Chocolate and Cheese, Pure Guava, and GodWeenSatan, as well as some deep cuts such as the B-Sides "Puerto Rican Power" and "Vallejo." Regular drummer Claude Coleman is not on all these shows and is sometimes replaced by Scott Colburn.

The shows typically featured Ween playing popular songs from Chocolate and Cheese, as well as newly written material (including "The Blarney Stone" & "Koko.") The number of staples was greatly reduced compared to the first leg and were generally more low-key songs.

Fifth Leg[edit | edit source]

In a 1997 interview, Dean Ween said this of this leg "Absolutely the worst tour that we've ever done. I think we've toured Europe four times and America probably seven or eight times but this was us at our lowest, most drunken, unhealthy state. We had a British tour manager- I probably shouldn't talk about him, he might see it. Our tour started off, we didn't sleep for two days, then we drove to Milan from London to play- we sat upright in the car and didn't sleep for two days straight and then the next day got into an accident in the mountains of Northern Italy. He drove away, so we got busted when we got to the Swiss border cause they were waiting for us. Somehow we ended up in Cologne. I heard when we got back there we won award for worst interview ever in the history of Euro TV."

Sixth Leg[edit | edit source]

The sixth and final leg of the Chocolate & Cheese tour saw Ween scaled back to its original duo formation. While Coleman would continue to play with the group later, Weiss would no longer perform with Ween but continue to produce their studio material.

For this leg, Ween acted as the opening band for the Foo Fighters, who were promoting their debut album. The duo only played only three headlining shows on this tour, and their opening slots lasted between 29 and 34 minutes.

As the band was once again performing as a duo with a backing track, but since they had not recorded any new backing tapes since 1993, they were limited largely to their earlier material. Dean Ween likened the tour to a repeat of the Pure Guava tour. Despite this, there was more variety in setlists compared to their 1994-1995 shows. The few staples include popular songs from their two Elektra albums, "Piss Up A Rope" from their upcoming 12 Golden Country Greats album, and "The Golden Eel," a newly written song that would eventually appear on The Mollusk. Staples from the previous leg, "Drifter In The Dark," "Marble Tulip Juicy Tree," "The Stallion pt 3" & "Tick" were performed less on this final leg, and "Pumpin' 4 the Man," & "Take Me Away," were dropped entirely.

The songs "Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain," "Mutilated Lips," "The Mollusk" & "Waving My Dick in the Wind" were played during this leg, all during the April 18th show at their home state of New Jersey..
