Take Me Away
"Take Me Away" is a song by Ween, released on the 1994 album Chocolate and Cheese.
Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]
"Take Me Away" revolves entirely around the chord progression of Em and F#m, with the exception of Gdim at the beginning of the song and at the end of the verses.
Andrew Weiss plays bass on the Chocolate and Cheese version.[1] Claude Coleman plays the drums.[2] Gene Ween sings the lead vocal.[3] "Take Me Away" was explicitly written to be the album opening song. They also originally intended to close the album with a slow song called "The Concert Is Over" which served as a counterpart to "Take Me Away", with Gener doing a similar crooner-style voice. A studio recording was begun but never finished. However, they played the song live as a set closer fairly commonly in the 90s.[4]
Alternate Versions[edit | edit source]
"Take Me Away" was written as early as the summer of 1992, when an early version of the song with drum machine backing was recorded at Greg Frey's Graphic Sound Studios. This version can be heard on the bootleg Chocolate and Cheese Demos: Summer 1992.
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
Ween started playing "Take Me Away" live in the spring of 1993 with DAT deck accompaniment, months before the Chocolate and Cheese album version was even recorded. After the live band was formed later that year, the song quickly became one of the most common live Ween songs and has remained so ever since. The only notable era of Ween that did not feature the song was the 1996 country tour.[5] A recording from 11/7–9/2003 on the Quebec tour was released on the Live in Chicago album.
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
Official lyrics were printed in the Chocolate and Cheese liner notes:
Take me away to some other land
I gotta get away from that girl before I go crazy
She took my love away
She took it to another man
Now I gotta get away from that girl
Before I go craaaazy
Gotta get away
Crazy
She took my love away
Now I gotta get away[6]
