Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"A Tear for Eddie" is in the key of F# minor.

The song was written by Dean Ween as a eulogy to the guitarist Eddie Hazel of Funkadelic, whom Deaner greatly admired and who died in December 1992 during the writing process of Chocolate and Cheese.[1] The song is a notable showcase for Dean's lead guitar playing.

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

Ween began playing "A Tear for Eddie" with the live band shortly after the release of Chocolate and Cheese, and it has remained a common live song ever since, in every era of Ween. It was even adapted with country instrumentation during the 1996 country tour.[2] A recording from 7/8/2000 on the White Pepper tour can be heard on the Live at Stubb's album. In addition, "A Tear for Eddie" has frequently been played by Dean Ween at solo shows, including with the Dean Ween Group.[3]
