Song Details[edit | edit source]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"Don't Get 2 Close" is a psychedelic glam rock song with art rock and psychedelic pop elements and an a cappella outro. The song is in the key of C major.

The song was written entirely by Dean Ween and was recorded on 4-track at The Pod.[1] The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween. The drum track was primarily created by Gene on a Roland TR-505 drum machine, with the tom fills inserted by Scott Lowe.[2] Guitar and bass is played by Dean.[3]

Scott Lowe is credited with 2nd vocal and the whistling solo in the Pure Guava liner notes.[4] Lowe has clarified that the vocal part he sang was the "upper harmonies".[5] The whistling solo was apparently done "on the fly": "We thought it was finished, but while playing it back, Mickey punched record and told me to do some whistling."[6] "Don't Get 2 Close" is the only song on Pure Guava that had direct involvement from Lowe.[7]

"Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)" is described on the Ween FAQ as a "homage to David Bowie Ziggy Stardust era music and lyrics".[8] In addition, Scott Lowe has described the song as "channeling early 70s era David Bowie".[9]

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

Since its introduction, "Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)" has consistently been one of the most common live Ween songs throughout every era of Ween, including the DAT-deck era and all iterations of the live band including even the 1996 country tour.[10]

Three live recordings have been officially released:

  • 10/31/1991 - At the Cat's Cradle, 1992 (Bonus DVD) - The first ever known live performance. Gene Ween sings it alone while strumming guitar, and doesn't seem to have all the lyrics worked out yet. He stops after the first chorus and calls it "just a taster".
  • 3/6/1992 - At the Cat's Cradle, 1992 (Bonus DVD) - More fleshed out with drum machine backing. Eight months before the release of Pure Guava
  • 12/9/1992 - At the Cat's Cradle, 1992 (CD) - The month after the release of Pure Guava

In addition, "Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)" has been played live individually numerous times by both Gene Ween (solo acoustic) and Dean Ween (including with the Dean Ween Group).[11]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

The Pure Guava lyric sheet contains official lyrics in Dean Ween's handwriting:

Don't quiver, little boy
Your daddy's with you now
It won't be long anyhow
It's just around the corner
The destiny that I embrace with you

Don't get 2 close to my fantasy
Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator
Stare into the lion's eyes, and if u taste the candy
You'll get 2 the surprise

Stay calm, little dreamer
And drift off into dreams
The gentle kiss of night is better than it seems
It's just around the corner
Close your eyes and soon you'll be with me[12]
