Moistboyz are a hard rock duo founded in 1992[1], consisting of Dickie Moist (Guy Heller) on vocals and Mickey Moist (Mickey Melchiondo, Jr./Dean Ween) on guitar and other instruments. While the band is often considered a side project to Ween, Mickey has expressed frustration with the categorization.[2]

The band is noted for Dickie's off-color stream-of-consciousness lyricism heavily influenced by hip hop[3] and Mickey's aggressive guitar work.

History[edit | edit source]

Moistboyz was formed in 1992, when Mickey Moist and Dickie Moist's respective bands, Ween and False Front, were living and recording in the same farmhouse after Mickey moved out of the Pod. Mickey and Dickie had previously known each other since the age of 14, due to sharing a girlfriend.[4] Their earliest material, recorded with the same 4-track recorder and drum machine as Ween's sessions at the Pod[5], would encompass the EP Moistboyz and their debut album, Moistboyz II. Mickey later recalled that their "breakthrough" song that would define the project was "Carjack".[4]

In 2002, they released their second album, Moistboyz III, which featured real drums performed by Lou Croschetti. Moistboyz IV would follow in 2005, being released on Sanctuary Records and featuring Claude Coleman, Jr. on drums (alongside Andrew Weiss on bass for the track "Fuck You").[6]

Moistboyz V was released in 2013 through Mickey and Dickie's own label, Neverman Records. In addition to guitars, Mickey produced and engineered the album as well. The album was originally produced simultaneously with The Deaner Album, though Mickey ultimately chose to focus on V.[7]

In 2023, Dickie announced via Facebook that, due to an unspecified cancer and treatment thereof, he had lost his ability to sing. Despite this, Moistboyz has not made an official statement on taking a hiatus. Dickie would later make enough of a recovery to perform live in 2024.
