"Piss Up a Rope" is a song by Ween from the 1996 album 12 Golden Country Greats.
Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording[edit | edit source]
"Piss Up a Rope" is in the key of G major.
The lead vocals are sung by Dean Ween, who also wrote the song.[1] The bass on the song is a six-string bass played by session musician Pete Wade. Producer Ben Vaughn stated that the bass was run through a "moogerfooger, I think it was one of those electro-harmonix pedals, it's like a micro-synth or a moog simulator you run your guitar through. Ween use it on almost everything."[2] The guitar solo is played by Dean Ween. Vaughn recalled that the strange effect on the guitar was created with a ring modulator.[3]
Meaning and Significance[edit | edit source]
The title phrase comes from an expression Dean Ween's father used to say.[4]
X-Files lead actor David Duchovny is a self-professed Ween fan because of "Piss Up a Rope", and his recommendation may have influenced the decision to include a Ween song ("Beacon Light") on The X-Files movie soundtrack. He was introduced to Ween by his then-girlfriend Téa Leoni, and credits Ween as one reason why they initially bonded and, eventually, became married:
When we first started dating, she sent me a song by Ween called "Piss Up a Rope". She sang it to me over the phone. It's really a funny song and the lyrics are really beautiful. . . . She was, I guess, explaining her worldview, or her sense of humor. She thought if I didn't laugh, I was probably a loser."[5]
Single Release[edit | edit source]
The 7" vinyl single from 1996 also contains the B-side "Sweet Texas Fire". The CD version of the 1996 You Were the Fool/Piss Up a Rope single includes the B-side "So Long Jerry". The 7" vinyl version omits the extra track.
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
"Piss Up a Rope" was debuted in early 1995 on the Chocolate and Cheese tour, and has been a very common live song ever since, across every era of live Ween. It has also frequently been played by the Dean Ween Group, and Gene Ween even played it once at a solo acoustic show.[6]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]
My dinner's on fire while she watches TV
And if you ever wondered what it's like to be me
She takes all my money and leaves me no smokes
Yells at my buddies and insults my folks
I'm breakin' my back doin' the best that I can
She's got time for the dog and none for her man
And I'm no dope, but I can't cope
So hit fuckin' road and piss up a rope
You can piss up a rope
And you can put on your shoes, hit the road get truckin'
Pack your bag, I don't need the ag
On your knees, you big booty bitch, start suckin'
You ride my ass like a horse in a saddle
Now you're up shit's creek with a turd for a paddle
And I can't cope, piss up a rope
You can piss up a rope and feel the pissy dribble
You can piss up a rope and watch me giggle
For the last six months I've been packin' your bag
You can wash my balls with a warm, wet rag
'Til my balls feel smooth and soft like silk
I'm sick of your mouth and your two percent milk
And I'm no dope, but I've lost all hope
So hit the fuckin' road and piss up a rope
You can piss up a rope
And you can put on your shoes, hit the road get truckin'
Pack your bag, I don't need the ag
On your knees, you big booty bitch, start suckin'
You ride my ass like a horse in a saddle
Now you're up shit's creek with a turd for a paddle
And I can't cope, piss up a rope
You can piss up a rope
And you can put on your shoes, hit the road get truckin'
Pack your bag, I don't need the ag
On your knees, you big booty bitch, start suckin'
You ride my ass like a horse in a saddle
Now you're up shit's creek with a turd for a paddle
And I can't cope, piss up a rope
You can piss up a rope
And you can put on your shoes, hit the road get truckin'
Pack your bag, I don't need the ag
On your knees, you big booty bitch, start suckin'
You ride my ass like a horse in a saddle
Now you're up shit's creek with a turd for a paddle
And I can't cope, piss up a rope
