"So Long Jerry" is a song by Ween, released as a B-side on the 1996 You Were the Fool/Piss Up a Rope maxi single.[1]

Song Details[edit | edit source]

"So Long Jerry" was recorded during the November 1995 sessions for 12 Golden Country Greats and features the same Nashville studio musicians and production style as the regular album. The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween. The song was written as a eulogy for the musician Jerry Garcia, who had died about three months prior to the recording sessions.

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

"So Long Jerry" has never been played live by Ween.[2] However, Gene Ween has played it numerous times, both solo-acoustic and with the Gene Ween Band.[3]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

I picked up my things and went outside

The man that I loved up and died

I couldn’t believe after all this time

Never knew the man, but he was a good friend of mine

So long, I’ll see you down that long dark river

Or floating on that lining in the sky

I’m lucky, lucky enough to have heard you play your song

So long, Jerry. So long

We’ll always be together

Rolling down the track

Always and forever

Never looking back

Got my guitar and went to the river

Saw a lot of people just dancing around

Took off my shirt and jumped in the water

You always flew so high, now you’ve finally left the ground

So long, I’ll see you down that long dark river

Or floating on that lining in the sky

I’m lucky, lucky enough to have heard you sing your song

So long, Jerry. So long

So long, Jerry

So long [4]
