Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]
"Sorry Charlie" is a psychedelic country rock song with some folk rock elements. It is in the key of G major.
The lead vocals are sung by Dean Ween.
When introducing the song on January 27th, 1998, Dean Ween said it was "about this dude named Chuck, who I used to know, and Chuck was gonna be quarterback at the university of Flordia, but he broke his leg or some shit. So he came home and started selling pot."[1] The song was recorded at The Pod during the later GodWeenSatan sessions between January and October 1990. It doesn't appear on any of the known Pod demo tapes.
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
Despite being released on 1991's The Pod, "Sorry Charlie" is not known to have been played live during the DAT-deck era. It was debuted in late 1994 with the full band on the Chocolate and Cheese tour (and notably was played a single time with the Shit Creek Boys on the 1996 country tour), but was not played with much frequency until the White Pepper tour in 2000, after which it became quite common to hear live. A recording from 7/7/2000 appears on the Live at Stubb's album, which is the only officially released live recording of the song. In addition, the Dean Ween Group has been known to play the song, where it was especially common in 2015 during the Ween hiatus.[2]
Drummer Claude Coleman has named this as one of his favorite Ween songs to play live.[3]
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
According to Dean Ween, the lyrics are as follows:
Things didn't work out the way you had planned it
Things fell apart at the seams
What's yours is what you took with you
What you have has shattered their dreams
And now you're cold and sleepy
Christ how did it come to this?
Hold on to those you thought were your loved ones
They'll be the ones you miss
And now you're standing at the station
Tryin' to take what I ain't got to give
Oh and I'm so sorry Charlie
I got my own life to live
Just call your friends at college
Wonder why you didn't stay
And my boss is comin' down soon Chuck
He's drunk and you can't stay-no you can't stay
You did nothin' to deserve this
God didn't treat you square
Oh it all slipped through your fingers
And it all seems so unfair
And your girlfriend she's in high school
She says she loves you alot
Lord knows she can't support you
So you better sell more pot
And now you're standing at the station
Tryin' to take what I ain't got to give
Oh and I'm so sorry Charlie
I got my own life to live
Just call your friends at college
Wonder why you didn't stay
And my boss is comin' down soon Chuck
He's drunk and you can't stay-no you can't stay
Sorry charlie.............[4]
