Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]
"Grepäk" is a psychedelic noise rock song in the key of D minor.
"Grepäk" was recorded in late 1989 alongside the song's second part, "The Wind", at Andrew Weiss's house the night he got the keys.[1] The version of "Grepäk" on Big Timmy Wasserman/The Stallion cuts over two minutes of psychedelic, effect-heavy noise from the end of the song which is present in a restoration of "Grepäk" and "The Wind" that the YouTube channel Ween Archived posted in 2023.[2]
In 2016, Dean Ween provided some insight to the lyrics in a comment under a blog post:
“Grepäk was handed down to the King – for what reasons do you becketh and bring? A scalded mind – a bundled nun – poor Grepäk gave his newborn sun. [sic]”[1]
He has also listed the opening couplet differently:
Grepäk was handed down to the queen / What has thou broughtest and bring?[3]
It is unclear which opening lyric is correct.
