Information/Trivia[edit | edit source]

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"I Saw Gener Cryin' in His Sleep" is an experimental country rock song in the key of G major.

The lead vocals are sung by Dean Ween. Backing vocals and the whistling solo are credited to Larry Curtin in the Pure Guava liner notes.[1]

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

"I Saw Gener Cryin' in His Sleep" was almost never played live prior to the 1996 country tour.[2] On the country tour, Ween reworked the song into a country version with the Shit Creek Boys, a recording of which (from 10/11/1996) is heard on the album Paintin' the Town Brown. According to Dean Ween, "this song never really worked live until we got the Nashville band".[3] Following that tour, Ween has occasionally returned to the song.[4] "I Saw Gener Cryin' in His Sleep" has also been played numerous times by the Dean Ween Group.[5]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

The Pure Guava lyric sheet contains official lyrics in Dean Ween's handwriting:

I heard my brother weepin' in the dead of the nite
I said, "Dude, man, you feelin' alright?"
Gener said nothing and continued to weep
I caught Papa Gene Ween cryin' in his sleep

I saw Gener cryin' in his sleep
I tried to wake him up, but he made not a peep

Life at the top can be tough
Sometimes u think you've seen enough
But u can find a diamond in the rough
But when it's time for bed, you shouldn't think about that stuff[6]
