"Zoloft" is a song by Ween from the 2003 album Quebec.
Song Details[edit | edit source]
Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]
Zoloft is an antidepressant medication used to treat various mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
"Zoloft" is a psychedelic electronic pop song with lounge influences. The verses revolve around the chords G and Gm, while the garbled spoken word sections are in the key of D# minor.
The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween who also plays bass on the track. Lead guitar is played by Dean Ween. Both Gene and Dean are also credited with playing keyboards. In addition, Andrew Weiss is credited with additional keyboards, percussion, and "fretless bass solo".[1]
"Zoloft" was the song that brought Weiss back to produce Quebec after a period of animosity towards the band. Gener later recalled in an interview:
It's funny -- when I was writing "Zoloft", there's a little taster, a backwards cymbal sound in there, and that keyed Andrew Weiss, because it's just such an Andrew thing to do. Then I realized that he should probably just work on all of the songs, so we got him back.[2]
Alternate Versions[edit | edit source]
"Zoloft" predates the Quebec album by at least a year and a half; an early demo version is found on the bootleg The Caesar Demos.
Live Performances[edit | edit source]
Ween began playing the song live in early 2002, and it has remained a common live Ween song ever since.[3] A 11/7-9/2003 recording from the Quebec tour is heard on the Live in Chicago album.
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
Official lyrics were printed in the Quebec liner notes:
Gimme that Z-O-L-O-F-T
Gimme a grip, make me love me
Suckin' 'em down, I'm happy man
Can feel it inside, makin' me smile
Realize that the sky's not made of gold
Don't disguise the nature of your soul
Gimme that Z-O-L-O-F-T
No longer pissed, and you don't bother me
I'm makin' it through, I'm givin' my all
When base are loaded, I'm whacking the ball
Don't suck the mind, don't drain the source
The path of life's not so easy to course, buddy[4]
