"Don't Let the Moon Catch You Cryin'" is a song that was originally an unreleased song by Ween, and was later recorded and released by the Dean Ween Group.

Song Details[edit | edit source]

In 2011, "Don't Let the Moon Catch You Cryin'" was included on The Caesar Demos, a semi-official compilation of Quebec demos compiled by Dean Ween.

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

Although "Don't Let the Moon Catch You Cryin'" was originally a Ween song, its only official release is by the Dean Ween Group on their 2018 album rock2.

The Ween version of "Don't Let the Moon Catch You Cryin'" is a psychedelic folk pop song in the key of A major. The Dean Ween Group version reduces the psychedelic elements in favor of a heavier folk rock sound, with elements such as a guitar solo. Dean also described the rerecorded song's sound as similar to the Eagles, but heavier like The Replacements.[1]

Deaner has stated that the reason for his rerecording of the song was a combination of disliking the verse lyrics and thinking it was the best song the band had written for Quebec. He rewrote the verses and part of a single sentence of the chorus with Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie to what Deaner stated was a more self-loathing personal song about his relationships.[2]

Live Performances[edit | edit source]

Ween has never performed "Don't Let the Moon Catch You Cryin'" live. However, it was performed three times by the Dean Ween Group on their tour to promote Rock2.[3]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Holding up a love that weighs close to nothing
Taking all the issues out to dry
Sun becomes a symbol, feeds the fire of evil
Put that flame of life back in my eye

Let the breezes sway your nighttime into day
Don't let the moon catch you cryin'
When all is said and done, you'll be left the only one
Who can cheat you out of having a good time

Why'd you say that thing about my friend Linda?
She's had a wet towel wrapped around her mind
The doubt you cast is hurtful, full of jealous anger
Get your poison talk out of our lives

Let the breezes sway your nighttime into day
Don't let the moon catch you cryin'
When all is said and done, you'll be left the only one
Who can cheat you out of having a good time

Cast out like a boat that's full of toxins
Crew's still got the bills they need to pay
Let 'em dock in the morning, get some cranes for lifting
Off that load and send 'em on their way

Let the breezes sway your nighttime into day
Don't let the moon catch you cryin'
When all is said and done, you'll be left the only one
Who can cheat you out of having a good time
