"Among His Tribe" is a song by Ween from the 2003 album Quebec.

Song Details[edit | edit source]

The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween, who also plays the acoustic guitar and synthesizer on the track. Dean Ween plays the electric guitar and bass. In addition, Andrew Weiss is credited with "the waste".[1]

An early demo version of "Among His Tribe" can be heard on the semi-official The Caesar Demos. Aside from a small number of solo-acoustic performances by Gene Ween, "Among His Tribe" was not played live by Ween until 2017. It remains a very uncommon live Ween song.[2]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Official lyrics were printed in the Quebec liner notes:

He would step out of the night
And light a fire among his tribe
Carving from a bear's tooth
He used the flesh to feed the youth
He'd salt it down

Sails were made from darkened hide
Fish were caught in the lowest tide
Thought of war kept him strong
He listened for the battle song
In the night

All the old would teach the young
To heed the word of the master's tongue
A chosen son would take a bride
And light the fire among his tribe
And on and on[3]
