Song Details[edit | edit source]

The lead vocals are sung by Gene Ween.

"She Wanted to Leave" was one of the earliest songs written in the creative process for The Mollusk. It was written in the fall of 1995, within the first two weeks of the first beach house recording sessions for the album.[1] According to Dean Ween, the song was inspired by the music of Richard Thompson. Gene was hesitant at first to bring the song idea to Dean, since he thought it was a "lame idea", but Dean convinced him to go through with it; Dean later said it was "one of the coolest songs we've ever done."[2] An early demo recording from the beach house period can be found on the semi-official The Mollusk Sessions; most of this recording was used as is for the final album, differing mostly in some mixing and production details.

"She Wanted to Leave" was introduced informally at a live Jimmy Wilson Group show in the summer of 1996, near the start of the 12 Golden Country Greats tour.[3][4] The following year, the song was introduced properly by Ween on the Mollusk tour, and has remained a common live Ween song ever since.[5] A 7/8/2000 recording from the White Pepper tour can be heard on the Live at Stubb's album.

In addition, Gene Ween has played "She Wanted to Leave" numerous times, both solo acoustic and with the Gene Ween Band.[6]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Official lyrics were printed in the liner notes of The Mollusk album:

Three men's all there were
Three men out at sea
Three men came aboard my ship
And took my true love from me
I couldn't believe
She wanted to leave
She wanted to leave

I've loved you so long
Since you were a child
I've cared for your every need
I've tried to make you smile
When all the while
You wanted to leave
You wanted to leave

Go gather the guns
We'll blast them at sea
She begged for me not to shoot
"For my true love is here with me
And I've never loved thee
And now I must leave
And now I must leave"

So go fetch a bottle of rum, dear friends
And fill up my glass to the rim
For I'm not the man I used to be
Now I'm one of them[7]
