Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

"Asphalt Lullaby" was recorded by Dean Ween and Guy Heller at Brookridge Farms.[1] It was recorded with the same equipment as the Ween song "Skycruiser".[2]

According to Heller, the song is about their friend, a tattoo artist named Joe Rose, who is also the subject of "The Blarney Stone".[3] In his words:

Joe would drive False Front to New York City to do gigs. By the time it [was] over he could barely drive. Falling asleep while driving. There is a long dark stretch of highway entering Flemington, NJ that is a sleepy ride at 4 A.M. Thus, "Asphalt Lullaby".[4]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Verse 1:

4 am and Joe is tired

Has to drive us home

He is drunk and feeling woozy

Please don't kill us Joey

I can see his eyelids closing

When the lights go by

Changing lanes without warning

Drifting off the side

Chorus:

Please don't play the mellow music

We don't want to die

Why are you so sleeping, snoring

Asphalt Lullaby

Verse 2:

The light was red but you kept going

So we hit a cat

The car when bump and you woke up

And you said what was that

Fluffy pillow in your eyes

Softer in your head

Fly away and sleep little baby

Soon we'll all be dead
