"Where'd the Cheese Go" is an unreleased song by Ween that was initially intended to be aired on television in an ad for Pizza Hut, dated around 2002.

Song Details[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

In 2002, Ween was hired by Pizza Hut to write music for a commercial promoting "The Insider", which had the slogan "where'd the cheese go?" (the cheese was entirely inside in the crust). Ween had submitted five versions of the song, all of which were rejected, before sending a profane version of their most recent recording to get themselves fired.

Recording and Composition[edit | edit source]

The key of "Where'd the Cheese Go?" depends on the version; version 2 (which shares its instrumental with "So Many People in the Neighborhood") is in the key of F major, version 4 (the soft, acoustic version) is in the key of G# minor, and the two final versions (including the notorious "Where'd the Fucking Cheese Go?") and live version are in the key of D minor.

Gene Ween has described his performance on the final two versions as being influenced by the Notorious B.I.G. and done "on the fly".[1]

Alternate versions[edit | edit source]

The most widely known version of "Where'd the Cheese Go?" is a 30 second track, repeatedly quoting the slogan of the ad campaign, "where'd the cheese go?". A rather crude version of this song, dubbed "Where'd the Fucking Cheese Go?", exists as the final demo that Ween sent Pizza Hut before they were fired from the contract. A total of six studio versions are known, including one that uses the backing track for "So Many People in the Neighborhood" (it is unclear which song came first). Four of these versions have been circulated by fans, while their first and third attempts have not.

The live version on All Request Live that released in 2003 has a runtime of almost 6 minutes, and it features a conversation on the phone between Gene and an unknown person.

Live performances[edit | edit source]

Ween have only played "Where'd the Cheese Go?" once, that being to close the set streamed over the internet at Graphic Sound Studio (which would later be released as All Request Live), though they teased the song once in 2003.[2]

Quotes[edit | edit source]

  • From the Chocodog Website:

Earlier in 2002 we were hired by the largest advertising firm in the country to write music for a Pizza Hut commercial. Pizza Hut had hired them to come up with a whole new image to promote their new Pizza, "The Insider" which had all the cheese inside the crust. In keeping in line with their new cutting edge image, the agency hired Ween to do the music, and we delivered in a big way. Unfortunately, they didn't like a single piece of the 6 tunes we submitted and they had us rewriting the song every day for a couple of weeks before they hired someone else. In my opinion, it is one of the best tunes we wrote all last year.
