A 4-track demo version can be found on the Boognish Rising Christmas 2013 Sampler, while the original Pine Sheep live recording can be found on New Hope Is A Bad Scene, supposedly taken from one of the later Pine Sheep jam sessions in either 1988 or 1989.

Timeline

It has been stated by Aaron that the song was originally written and recorded by The Pine Sheep. The circulating recording from the New Hope Is A Bad Scene cassette features Karl Weimar, Larry Curtin and Aaron.

"I Hate The Smiths" is actually a Pine Sheep song. The Pine Sheep

consisted of Mickey, myself and a bunch of friends way back in the day.

I have a beat up old cassette of these recordings somewhere but somehow

this tune got out. The real title is "I Hate The Smiths (and Steven Morrissey)"

A home demo of the track was later recorded by Aaron and Scott Lowe on 4-track circa 1991, a few years after the song was recorded live by The Pine Sheep. Scott preforms keyboards and backing vocals on this version.

I would say that Aaron was a fan (of Morrissey) at first, and the song " I Hate The Smiths" is mainly inspired by Morrissey's controversial opinions and behavior, even as far back as the early 90s. The four track version recorded at my place went unheard until I shared it with Chris Buly about 15 years ago. I prefer that version because Gene does a good vocal performance on it, plus I play keyboards and did backing vocals. The Pine Sheep version is a poor unrehearsed performance, in my opinion. - Scott Lowe

Scott Lowe has also gone on record stating this recording of the song could be more rightly attributed to Synthetic Socks than it could be to Ween.
