Freeman is the eponymous sole album of the band Freeman, released in 2014.

Description[edit | edit source]

After leaving Ween in 2012, Aaron Freeman (at the time formerly known as Gene Ween) started a proper solo career (after having done solo acoustic shows for years prior), with his first solo outing being a collection of Rod McKuen covers, Marvelous Clouds.

The band, named after Freeman himself, was formed with local musicians from the Woodstock, NY, area, where Freeman had recently moved in. Chris Shaw, who produced White Pepper, produced the album.

One of the first songs Freeman wrote for the album was "(For a While) I Couldn't Play My Guitar Like a Man", which he had initially recorded on his phone three weeks after rehab, later noting he liked the titular line repeated throughout the recording enough to make a song out of it. He has stated that the song is not autobiographical.[1] The opening track, "Covert Discretion", was written about an incident in 2011 where Freeman was heavily intoxicated during a Ween concert and had the other four band members walk out on him onstage.[2]
