"Ace of Spades" is a Motörhead song that has been covered live by Ween.

Song Details[edit | edit source]

Bassist Dave Dreiwitz sings the lead vocals for live performances of "Ace of Spades".

Ween first covered "Ace of Spades" at a unique and informal 1991 show with friends (including Dreiwitz) billed as Green Lipped Mussels.[1] At this performance, Gene Ween notes that it was Dean's idea to cover the song:

"Mickey had a good point, he said that he respects the song so much that we should do it. . . . It's really a shame that we're about to do this song, but we're gonna do it. Have mercy on us, and please forgive us . . . but we're gonna do it, 'cause I love Dave's voice, and Dave's gonna sing this song."[2]

Over a decade after this one-off show, Ween brought "Ace of Spades" back on a recurring basis in 2003 during the Quebec era, and have continued to play it occasionally ever since.[3] In addition, Dean Ween has played it at several solo shows, including with the Dean Ween Group (always with Dreiwitz); and Dreiwitz even played it solo at several Gene Ween acoustic shows, singing and playing bass alone.[4]

The song itself was written by Lemmy Kilmister, Eddie Clarke, and Phil Taylor of Motörhead, and is the title track of their 1980 album Ace of Spades.[5] It is often considered to be Motörhead's most definitive and iconic song.
