"Shrimp on the Barbie" is a live-only song by Ween, only performed live once during a live radio broadcast on Australian radio program Triple R, on April 18th, 1995.[1]

Song Details[edit | edit source]

Personnel[edit | edit source]

Shrimp On The Barbie is a 12-bar blues, featuring Ween's live band up to that point, with Gene Ween on vocals, Dean Ween on acoustic guitar, Andrew Weiss on bass, and Claude Coleman Jr. on drums. Additionally, they are joined by a caller named Dylan, who plays harmonica over the phone.[2]

Context and Creation[edit | edit source]

During the broadcast, they were fielding questions and song requests from fans calling in. At some point during the broadcast, a caller named Dylan phones in. He "wondered if [Ween were] looking for any harp [common alternative name for harmonica] players."[3] After a bit of banter, Dylan asks "can you play an E?" He asks if they can hear him, before asking them to play some 12-bar. The jam starts, with Gene Ween improvising lyrics on the spot. Dean Ween would go on to say to Dylan after the song's conclusion:

"You got the gig, man. We'll see you tomorrow, totally. Show up at soundcheck."[4]

He then asked for Dylan's name:

"What's your name? Dylan? Dylan, you're on the guestlist. Every show for the rest of the tour."[5]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Woo!

Yeah, I got a shrimp on the barbie
And I got a VB in my hand
Yeah, got a shrimp on the barbie
And I got a VB in my hand
Yeah, I traveled 26 hours
To get to Victorialand

Now let it out!

Burn it!

Oh!

WOAH!

Yeehaw! WOOOOO!
