"Genene" is an Aaron Freeman (Gene Ween) solo song. After Freeman released the song to his Soundcloud account in 2012, Entertainment Weekly erroneously reported that he was undergoing gender reassignment surgery.[1]

Background and media coverage[edit | edit source]

"Genene" was released on Aaron Freeman's Soundcloud account in December 2012.[2] The same day, Glide Magazine's Hidden Track column ran an article which suggested the song could be interpreted as Freeman coming out as transgender.[3] Entertainment Weekly ran with this story in an article which it later amended, after former Ween manager Greg Frey denied that the rumor was true.[4]

In a 2015 interview, Freeman confirmed that the original article was an intentional prank by himself and Glide Magazine writer Scott Bernstein.[5]

Live performances[edit | edit source]

Aaron Freeman performed the song live three times in the spring of 2013.[6] Brownbase lists the song's title as 'Janine'.

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Genene, wake up and see the day
The operation's through
We're so very proud of you

Genene, the transformation's done
You're truly born again
Yes my darling, dance with me

Genene, your dressing needs to be changed
One more time, then never again
Genene, let's get you something to eat
Kitchen's on, the food is fine

Genene, the odd has met the end
It circles like a bee
Flowers from a friend

Genene, I'll walk you to the door
And see to it you're safe
You journey for us all

Genene, the dressing can now be removed
The cut has healed
You're beautiful

Genene, never need to pretend
Love is a gift
Honest and true

Genene
Genene
Genene

Genene[7]
